Willamette Valley Vineyards has won approval from the US Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (formerly the ATF) to label its 2002 Barrel Select Pinot Noir with the wine’s resveratrol content. Resveratrol, a popular supplement ingredient, is an antioxidant produced by grapes to fight fungi and is believed to be the chemical in red wine that helps reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer.
Thought to be the first label of its kind, the label reads “Pinot noir develops a natural defense against botrytis (mold) in our moist, cool climate – the antioxidant resveratrol.” Below this the label states “RESVERATROL 10.96 MICROMOLAR.” (A micromolar is a concentration of 1/1,000,000 (one millionth) molecular weight per liter (mol/L).
